Links

In this page you can find the links to websites providing some of the tools I used to design this site. All the links but the ones to Microsoft websites will take you to free software. You can also find the links to some of my friends' websites.

Operating system and Internet Application

  • Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP
  • E-mail client: ThunderBird
  • Browser: FireFox, with the following extensions:
    • Launchy, the best friend of all users who like having a look at the source code or just browsing around
    • downTHEMall: lets you download all link targets in a web page (you can also filter by file extension)
    • Google Toolbar: very useful because everytime you google for a word, it creates a button that looks for that word in the page you've found
    • Tabbrowser Preferences, the perfect extension of the tabbed browsing functions implemented in FireFox

Office and similar

  • Office Suite: for "power" users, there is no real alternative to Microsoft Office, but if you're better off with basic functions you can use Open Office, which, by the way, is much nicer as far as philosophy and look and feel are concerned
  • Typesetting language: LaTeX, which was next to me while I was writing my Master Thesis and every time I had to write something long and/or with lots of mathematical formulas. For Windows there are not many alternatives to the MikTeX distribution, which is best with TeXnicCenter as an editor. In case you have problems with these softwares and you speak Italian, you can have a look at the Guit, a very interesting forum

Web Design

  • Editor: Crimson Editor: simple and flexible, lets you edit several files at the same time and colors fonts according to syntax
  • FTP Client (the one I used to upload the pages of this website): FileZilla
  • Template: on this website I found the layout I modified to get the one you see
  • Validators: World Wide Web Consortium (w3c) created some tools to let designers check wether web pages respect the standards for xhtml and css code.

Information Technology news and forum

  • In order to be up to date with IT security, you need to visit:
    • Punto Informatico (in Italian): always the first site to report the latest hardware and software innovations and the regulatory changes (in Italy)
    • Zeus News (in Italian); some times a bit one-sided, reports IT news with interesting details on the implications on the rights of consumers
  • Cyberimpero Feudale (in Italian): unfortunately not very active, but you can always find the help you need there. The members are skilled, nice and willing to help

Friends' websites

  • Antiqvitas: Andrea's incredible website about ancient Greek and Roman culture
  • Nanni's website about the Red Cross
  • My friends from the Cyberimpero Feudale:
    • Cristallography, animal rights and classical music at Pincopallino's two websites (linked to each other)
    • Relax at Egosumquisum's website
    • Spectacular web design at Rebelia's website
    • Again web design and comics masterpieces at Juzo Kun's website
    • Lots of useful and funny things can be found at SverX's webiste
